Library of History of Music

The Library ofHistory of Music includes all sorts of assets around the field of Musicology.

Important donations - e.g. Scotese, Carmeli, de Pizzini von Hochenbrunn and Caporali - have gained recognition for the Library as an authority for historical-musical research at an international level. The Library is also a place for meeting and exchange between people active in the fields of research, culture and musical practice. The Library assets, which has also benefitted from purchase proposals by its users, have continuously increased, so much so that currently our Library represents one of the richest of its field in Italy. It provides valid reference not only to students of the “La Sapienza” University of Rome, but also to scholars from all over Italy and abroad.

The current assets provide access to a diversified book heritage covering a wide thematic spectrum aimed at satisfying the needs of the modern research activity:

  • over 20,000 volumes of historical-musicological theory and literature texts, musical theater, sacred, modern and contemporary music
  • about 9,000 music scores
  • more than 500 hall programs and opera librettos
  • a varied collection of musical information magazines, CDs, DVDs and VHSs.

The Library also possesses authoritative critical editions of opera omnias and collections, and is amply supplied with book, visual and audiovisual material also in the ethno-musical field.

The current assets cover various music genres, e.g. opera, symphonic, chamber, jazz, rock and pop music.
